Creating Opportunities for young people to have options for future education, training employment

What we do

We deliver a bespoke vocational training project to young people on the verge of, or have been, permanently excluded from school, other education provisions, training or employment.

We understand that school does not work for everyone, therefore, alternative, creative and innovative measures and curriculums are needed to support young people and prevent them from becoming long-term unemployed.

In our dynamic working environment, we deliver a holistic vocational project which is tailored to the individual needs of the young person and we always ensure we work in small groups to achieve this.

Mission

Youth Engagement Service is an alternative education and vocational training provision in Greater Manchester for young people aged 14-19 who have social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties.

We enrich learning by working closely with local Secondary Schools, Pupil Referral Units, Youth Offending Teams, Social Services and Connexions.

Our aim is to assist these young people with their education, by broadening and developing their employability skills, in preparation for working life

VocationalIn our Work Based Learning Centre, we work with young people, giving them skills in a variety of trades:Joinery/CarpentryPlasteringBricklayingTilingHand Made- Mini Enterprise Hand Made designs and creates bespoke wooden products for both inside and outside the home. Using materials which are recycled and ethically sourced and using local suppliers, our young people create bespoke products for our customers. Young people are involved in running the mini enterprise. They gain valuable skills in design, production, marketing and finance. Our aim is to raise ambition and aspirations, and empower the young person.Work in the CommunityThe community project is set up to support and assist communicty groups who do not have the funds for repairs and maintenance work that needs doing.Our young people offer their skills and knowledge to carry out work that needs completing.Our project is not just about developing our young people's skills, it is about developing positive relationships within the community.There is a big focus on inter-generational activities between the young and older generations, promoting proactive otivation amongst young people and the community to build social cohesion.Previous Projects Irlam and Cadishead Horticultural Society- Landscaping and construction of outhouses.Nest Box Week with Salford City Council Rangers- Working with the local community, primary school children and special educational needs young people, demonstrating how to make bird boxes.Walkden Manor Residential Home- Rebuilt unsafe brick wall, rendered garden walls, painted fences, donated bird boxes.

14th October 2011One Month In... ...an amazing startYoung people have been back at YES for just over a month and already there is so much to talk about.NEW CREWWe have welcomed new students from Salford, Manchester, Stockport and Rochdale with a variety of life experiences and stories to tell. We welcomed our first female student (woohoo!!) who is already giving the guys a run for their money!!NEXT PROJECTOur new project is Habitats. Students have been beavering away making homes for all types of crazy critters. From bird boxes and bat boxes, butterfly houses and bug hotels, squirrel boxes and hedgehog boxes, the wildlife in salford will soon have somewhere to call HOME. Next, we are moving on up in the property market by building dog kennels, cat palaces, chicken coops and duck houses. We have been commissioned to make a rabbit hutch and guinea pig hutch. Once completed, I will upload pictures to our facebook page and our website and start taking your orders. Irwell Valley has asked our students to make 7 long window boxes for them. Currently being made, this is giving our students first hand experience of becoming entrepreneurs.
